Music Review of I CELEBRATE YOU _ Peter Gonsalves
Hi Jesus! Its me

I CELEBRATE YOU - Peter Gonsalves, SDB.

(Tej-Prasarini)

To quote composer song writer Peter Gonsalves, this is A celebration of reconciliation, worship, praise, thanksgiving to the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ for every blessing received and for being my God. Well said. His emotions are stark naked and seesaw as he bares his soul as he sinks, searches, seeks and sees his God. The structure of the album reflects the intermittent surrender, desperation, depression, repentance, joy, hope and ecstasy he experiences, or as a matter of fact any pilgrim does.

Sharon Rodrigues starts by surrendering All For You -- a classic Offertory hymn, which if you are Indian, you would have grown up to these strains. In How Much Longer you encounter the desperation of sinning, inspite of knowing better, touching rock bottom and repenting and requesting God for His mercy. Asif Ali Baig sings sensitively to Indian percussion and an Indian folk style keyboard play by Amon Daniels. Sing My Soul, a peppy duet, is joyous in praise. Song Of Repentance (Kelvin Afonso) is sombre but ends with a mercy plea. Whereas Wonderful Love (Suzanne D Mello), done to a fast fox-trot, is comforting. O Father Dear featuring sweet songster Samantha Edwards is about doing a trade off of negative human emotions to resting in His peace and love, set to a simple musical arrangement. Surrender is penned later than All For You and is more mature by hindsight and the orchestration also reflects this.

The flip side starts with a bang, a beat and bass guitar runs (Aaron Daniels) as Asif Ali Baig belts the punchy youth festival anthem, Youth For Life which captures the desires and enthusiasm of a younger generation, which dreams an ideal dream. Father Forgive Theme moves from Jesus prayer to our fervent plea with a request to teach us to love. In this duet Samantha is sensitive. Wonderful Father is a simple profession of what Father God does and gives and results in us breaking into song.

The finale is about finding. The Difference (A Peace Makers Anthem), rendered beautifully by Francois Castellino, is pertinent and relevant to our current times of hatred and strife. It is about a choice for change. This is one of Peter’s most memorable tracks in thought, harmony, melody and interpretation. Your Word Is A Lamp is about seeking God through the Bible. The title song sung by Karen Afonso is simply spectacular and is about a crisis of faith, dying to self and rising from the ashes as I Celebrate You. Great lyrics, great music and a truly great track.

The mood is mellifluous, mellow, lovely, tuneful and easy listening. The songs have a fusion of contemporary verse, Western melodies with a lot of Indian touches on percussion (Joy Bhattacharya), flute (Milind Sheori) and orchestration, keyboards, guitar, arrangements (Amon Daniels). The church choir of St John Bosco, Borivali, ably backs them.

This album, which is produced by Fr Darryl D Souza, SDB, has a world launch on January 1, 2003.

The jacket reflects the contrasts in moods perfectly with a pitch-black background offset with vibrant verdant leaves with shades of pink.

This is a very positive compilation as you join Peter in his walk down memory lane, through the ups and downs in life, through darkness and light, knowing all along that God is there. You get to see Peter up front, close, personal and real as you have never before seen him. This is a truly remarkable experience. Experience it.

IWILL BOW TO YOU - Bob Fitts

Hosanna! Music

This is about a Love story. This album will be remembered as a transition album. He sings with the fever and fervor of the old coupled with a feeling of freshness and trust when stepping into uncharted territories exploring the depth of God's love. The transient nature of everything is contrasted with the timelessness of His love which spans all generations.

There is a mix of new as well as old songs. It spans not a generation gap but bridges the gap by spreading the message of Love to generation next. The music ranges from sweet and syrupy to a hard driving beat.

There is a pearl which starts out soft slow and smooth and ends up raw rough but real. He just lets it rip to soft rock  Song Of Every Age. The lead riffs take over the acoustic sound and the power bass and drums come into play. The sound is mind blowing. Bob belts out the lyrics singing and though the music may change the Rock will never grow old ...      Jesus will never change ...    ... Jesus the song of every generation. This is heady stuff.

Andi Fitts his son, representing the new generation, features on the album with two tracks which are contrasting in style from Bobs even though it has the same plea ...I Love To Be With You and Pull Me Closer. His statement is simple and stark. The music is minimal but loaded with heavy bass and drums offsetting his high pitched voice.

The timeless classic Blessed Assurance is heartfelt. I Will Bow To You is about surrender and is soft, soothing and still. Constant Companion is a reflection on the long standing tender trusting relationship he has with Jesus. The melody is memorable. The lyrics is a prayer about calling on His name and the resultant melting into His Love based on His Love ... always. This is a very reflective contemplative kind of song and yet so simple and beautiful.

The exuberant joy and love he experiences bursts in a twelve bar number, Of All The Things About You.

This is one of those rare album where each song is a masterpiece on a relationship with the Master of Peace.

TERI UPASANA KARUN - I WORSHIP YOU

Integrity Music

I was apprehensive when I was told that Worship With Don Moen was done in Hindi. It had Hindi overdubs, Hindi lyrics and even had a bamboo flute and tabla engineered and remixed in the original tracks for good measure. Even the inlay cover had a smattering of English with respect to the Scripture references and the original titles but the lyrics and song titles were in Hindi. I was intrigued when I read the label, Integrity Music, on the cover. l pressed PLAY cautiously unsure as to what to expect. I was stunned, shocked and surprised at what I heard. Should I add rather pleasantly?

I am not sure if you would call this a cover version or karaoke or a recording to a modified back trax or minus one. You might term it a fusion of Hindi lyrics with a western musical score with the lilting flute giving it an Indian but International flavour of world music. Be that as it may I honestly say that it is outstanding. No it is not Don Moen singing in Hindi. But Don Moen would definitely approve. Rohan D Souza does the honours with a mellifluous voice which is smooth and strong. He starts with a lovely rendition of Hona Chahun Tu Hai Vahan (I Just Want To Be Where You Are). Karo Dhanyavadh (Give Thanks) is touching. The bansuri and the free flowing raaga just seals it. Nekh Hai Prabhu (God Is Good) and Abh Shashwat Oos Raja Ko (Now Unto The King Eternal) is to an upbeat march. The latter is particularly punchy in the vernacular.

Sangeeta Awale is a singer gifted with a honey toned voice. She has a unique sensitive voice which is universal in its appeal. Tera Sthir Mein (Your Steadfast Love) is lovely with tabla tapping in the background. However the divine duet she does in voices on the title track Teri Upasana Karun (I Worship You)is so cool. It is definitely the highlight of this album. This and Prabhu Raah Banayega or the Indian avatar of God Will Make A Way is a personal favourite.

This like the original ends with the joyous bubbly high spirited Aaoo Manayen Yesu Manayen (Celebrate Jesus).

Right through the chorus is melodious in superbly controlled voices with great feeling.

What is remarkable is the translation of the lyrics into Hindi by Melwin Moraes and Denis Mhowdawalla. The verse is smooth and the Indian feel is enhanced by the overdubs with Indian instruments which blend seamlessly with the original scores.

The effect is truly remarkable transcending the barriers of language. This project is the first of its kind, in Hindi or in India or as a matter of fact for the Integrity Music label. Take my word for it, this is definitely a landmark album.

Hi Jesus! It's me.
by Jose' Cordeiro
Hi Jesus! How are you doing? Thanks for getting me to the church on time. Let us "do" the Eucharist!
What a relief I felt after my Reconciliation! I feel terrible whenever I go off track. I just can't seem to do things right. Please bless me in name of my loving Father who created me, the Son -- yes You Jesus -- who died for me, saves me, heals me and .... and my sweet Holy Spirit who is constantly there to show me the way.
Today shall I pray for my family, friends and relatives? Hey I must pray for ?? He asked me to. I know you said to love my enemies. I don't seem to be in a loving mood. I need an attitude change. I surrender my loveless feelings to you. I can't believe this. You've done it again. I feel a shade better already. Thanks are in order.
"We are gathering together unto Him" It's so funny. My emotions are entangled but my heart is happy singing the hymn. It is assuring to know that You are alive. Thanks for being there for me always.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. As I hear these words, I can feel the love of the Triune God gushing. May the Celebrant also feel Your agape love. He seems a little under the weather.
I hear Alvin Slaughter singing, "Lay down your burdens at the altar, Cast all your cares upon the Lord, Join in the time of celebration, Offer your heart to Him alone". Oh Jesus I have sinned exceedingly. It's my tongue again. My thoughts are up to tricks. My attitude needs an overhauling. Selfishness! All this is too hot to handle. Jesus just take them. Please forgive me for I know not what I do. Thank God You have a loving heart. I need to hear You. I need some comforting. I can feel it in my bones that You will heal me where it hurts most. You make me happy.
Your loving forgiveness overwhelms me as I hear Lord Have Mercy. I am tripping. It is so beautiful when we sing the Gloria with our hearts full of praise and thanks. Do we sound like the angels in heaven? I know Your love and healing is released by our attitude of gratitude.
O Holy Spirit you know what is in my heart, mind, soul and spirit. You know what is Father God's will for me. Please let me pray through Jesus so that I don't do my thing but that Your will be done. If there is a clash then please teach me to accept and not fight Your will. How do I know Your will? Jesus, You are the Word. Throw some Light on my life-situations. I am confused. Let the Word, that is You, be birthed in my mind, my lips and my heart. Yes I believe in You, God the Father. Yes Jesus Christ I know You are my Lord and Saviour. Yes Holy Spirit I believe in You and feel Your Fire. Speak to me. I am listening.
All right. I will keep my petitions on hold. We will intercede for the Church and the governments. The salvation of the world is an issue close to Your heart. My name is etched in Your heart. Am I as close as Your favourite disciple, who was leaning on You at Your Last Supper?
Jesus, just how You took the bread and wine then, we bring to the altar now all that we are and all that we have. Our praises as well as our petitions. Our physical problems we offer with the bread. Our starved souls, mangled minds and erratic emotions we bring along with the wine. Just as the drop of water mingles in the wine do make us one with You. Jesus thanks for the blessings. Transformation. What a difference You make in our lives! Bonding with You breaks bondage. My heart is overflowing with joy as we sing, "Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest". God the Father please accept these gifts. Through Jesus, we offer our unworthy selves.
Jesus Its You I desire! I want You! I need You! I love You! Nothing else matters.
My heart is bubbling and bursting with bliss as I hear Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. AMEN! Here I am. Yes Father I am Yours.
You are such a loving Father. Your love is perfect. We praise Your holy name from the bottom of our hearts. Please rule in our hearts, lives and over our iniquities. Thanks not only for our daily earthly bread which nourishes our body but also for the daily Eucharistic bread which is food for our drooping spirits. Forgiveness is the crux of the matter. This is a difficult one. Please teach me to forgive so that I experience Your love and healing touch. Don't let temptations "nest" in my mind. Please clear the cobwebs out. Yes I know that if You are with us no one can be against us. Protect me from every kind of evil, sin and anxiety. Let nothing come between us. Lets Your love and peace flow like a flood. Your peace is beautiful. Yes, the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical and psychological peace which only you can give. We all need generous portions. All are smiling. We are all one body in You. You insist that we have to be a smiling, sharing, caring and loving Church. Its Your love that does it.
Thanks for your unconditional love. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. I believe that only You can renew, revive and refresh me. I don't have the faith of the "centurion" or the "hemorrhaging woman". I need a "double helping" of faith. Jesus, just as you did with your disciples, let Your love transform me completely. Make me meek and humble. Fill every part of my being. Let me become one with You. Let me be in communion through Communion.
I walk towards You. I worship You. I touch You. You are real. You are on my tongue. I can feel You. I can't bite You. I swallow You. I consume You. Your Body and Blood nourishes my body and blood. Your Spirit transforms my spirit.
I hear music in the silence. It's Love! Joy! Still! Speechless! I listen. You talk. I hear. I know that I know what I know. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Praise God! Thanks and thanks again. Christ is in me!

Celebrate Jesus!

Jose' Cordeiro
The Mass, the Eucharist, the Table of God, the Lord's Supper, the Breaking Of Bread, the Assembly, the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharist, the Paschal Sacrifice, the Bread of Life. We have often heard these words during the Sunday sermon and on Maundy Thursday, year in and year out.
What do these Words mean to you? What emotions do The Blessed Sacrament, Adoration, Sacred Heart evoke? Are you consumed by Love when you receive the host or is it just a wafer, a symbol, a remembrance, a ritual? Are you in communion with Christ through Holy Communion? Does the Eucharist in the Blessed Sacrament and during the celebration of the Mass mean anything to you? What do you reflect on? Do you feel anything? Or don't you? Do you want a healing for yourself, others or the ancestral family tree? Are you thankful for the blessings and do you release the curses and evil to Jesus? Have you lifted your problems in prayer? What's Liturgy? Are you a petition-person or a praising one? Have these ever crossed your mind? Do you think these queries are just mumbo-jumbo or the quest of an idle mind?
What do you want Him to be for you during the Eucharist? "I AM WHO AM" (Ex 3:14) echoes when Jesus says, "I AM" (Jn 8). He is that what we want Him to be for us at all levels - spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual. What is this all about?
LOVE! Yes. It's all about LOVE!
Love was memorialized when God made a covenant through the ceremonies conducted by Moses (Ex 24). Jesus is Love personified at the Last Supper. "Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life" (Jn 3:16).
Have I experienced agape Love? Yes. After I was "renewed" in the Spirit I started attending Mass, once again, after a gap of 16 years, with eager enthusiasm but no knowledge. It was beautiful. I was in rapt attention partly because I did not know the prayers. The Holy Spirit led me gradually. When I read "Prison to Praise" by Merlin Carothers the testimonies of Thanking and Praising under all circumstances touched my consciousness. It suddenly dawned on me that the entire Liturgy was based on Thanks and Praise. Later I learnt that the very meaning of the original Greek word Eucharistia means Thanks and Praise.
I always felt the presence of the Lord when saying the "Our Father". I noticed that it just happened that my attention was drawn to Jesus and focused during the "Consecration". The "Hymns" came alive when for three days I approached the Lord during the Mass. I got the same reply while we sang Ps. 23, "The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want". The "Readings" touched me at my point of need. I recall when the most religious person in my family passed away I had a problem getting a priest to say the Mass. The Lord looked into that and went a step further. The "Reading" was "The stone which the builders rejected has become the keystone" (Lk. 20:13). I identified with and was smothered by the Love in those words. A dear friend of mine shared an "open" testimony how he moved from the world of wine, women and weed to Worship. During his worldly days, no matter what, he always went for daily Mass. He told me that he was set free through the Eucharist. The joy he exuded when he spoke of the celebration of the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament was palpable -- Love in action.
There had to be something beyond just feeling the Presence at different parts of the Mass. Something much more than stray instances of God manifesting. I needed a deeper understanding and experience. I needed to move on from this point. The Spirit of Truth pointed to the Truth. The Spirit pointed to Jesus (Jn. 15:26).
I was introduced to a book which was bang on target -- "Healing Through The Eucharist" by Robert De Grandis ssj with Linda Schubert (St Pauls). An awesome account of enriching experiences through, with and in the Eucharist. I could feel the Presence of Jesus as I read and was in tears as I related to what I had experienced. I dived deeper and deeper in Worship. The depth of insight of these "anointed" authors blew me away. As you pray the Forgiveness Prayer remember "Forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling". The Staircase Of Life Prayer is a walk up an imaginary staircase with Jesus on one side and Mary on the other filling us with lots of love to take care of all the hurts that need healing
I came across a practical, hands on, down to earth, work book, "Making The Eucharist Work" by Justin Sequeira sss (Tej-Prasarini) which described in detail the words and rites and how you should participate in the Mass. It is so structured that you could either skim it or delve deep into the intricacies of the Scripture references and the spiritual exercises. Either way you'll be essentially enriched by the enterprise. The Altar Missal had detailed information on how the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is identical with that that was offered on the Cross of Calvary. The meaning of the ceremonies at Mass was conveyed through a neat table which has a direct relationship between the actions of the priest and that of Jesus, commencing from when Christ goes in the Garden of Olives, right to the point when the priest gives the final blessing which is akin to Christ sending down the Holy Spirit.
As usual I put into practice what I read and the Mass took on a whole new meaning. I am in a continual dialogue with God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Earlier in my personal prayers I always asked for a daily "in-filling" of the Holy Spirit. This overflowed into the Celebration of the Eucharist. I am one with Christ during the Mass. I can't get enough of Him. I need Him daily. The more I surrender the more He fills me. His Love consumes me. Now I am tuned in, clued in, cued in, in union with or what have you. The ultimate beautiful experience gets more beautiful. I feel like a burning candle consumed by the Fire and melting into Him. The more I Celebrate the more I melt. Wow!
Jesus is alive and real during and in the Eucharist. When you receive Him and consume Him, He forms part of your body, blood and being. He is in you. This is as close as you could get. As you Worship "let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God -- what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect" (Rom. 12:2).
I realized there are no set rules. God has His own agenda. He reacts to your heart and not to whether you use "structured" or "free" prayers. So feel free to be free as at the end of it all only He sets us free. If in doubt it is best to let the Spirit lead your prayers since in Rom. 8:27 it is clearly stated "And He who sees inner secrets knows the desires of the Spirit, for he asks for the holy ones what is pleasing to God". You experience His Presence whether you are happy, sad, serious, loud, silent, clapping, dancing, singing or still. Nothing's fixed. The way to get people back to the Church is through unconditional love. If in your family you are the only one with the Lord then stand in the gap for your folks and lift your entire family during the Mass. He will work miracles.

Let me share what I experienced, learnt, heard, read and was made aware. I pray that you may have your own unique enriching experience in total unity with Jesus.
SACRAMENTS
Reconciliation or Confession and the resultant repentance result in healing.
PREPARATION
Be calm, tranquil and quiet and reflect on what you want to bring to God during the Eucharist.
INTRODUCTORY RITE
Holy Water -- When you sign yourself expect the Lord to bless you. This is also used to expel demons {HTTE}.
Entrance Procession and Song -- Praise The Lord from your heart and rejoice always even if you are feeling miserable.
The Sign Of The Cross -- In the name of the Father (who created us), the Son (Jesus the Redeemer and Healer) and the Holy Spirit (who continually sanctifies us)
Greeting -- "The grace and the love and the fellowship" speaks of the unconditional love of the Triune God.
Penitential Rite -- Lay all your burdens at the altar; cast all your troubles on the Lord. Accept your sinfulness. Bare your soul and thoughts. Hand everything you can't deal with to Jesus. Ask God to forgive you, your parents and ancestors. Know that He has forgiven all. Believe that reconciliation and healing are taking place. Let go and listen to Him. Rejoice because He is God.
Lord Have Mercy -- Mercy means love and forgiveness in action.
Gloria -- Let your song of praise and thanks resound like the angels in heaven. The "attitude of gratitude" to God the Father and the Lamb releases God's love and healing.
The Collect/Opening Prayer/Oration/Let us Pray -- The prayers of the community are presented to the God the Father, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
Scripture Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Hallelujah! -- God speaks to His people. Let the word be birthed in your mind, lips, and heart. What have you to act on? The word heals you, the family tree and the person/s for whom you intercede.
Homily -- Pray that you hear what you need to hear for spiritual nourishment and healing.
Creed -- We say YES to God the Father, Jesus Christ as Lord and the Holy Spirit. After professing our faith we will later answer an altar call when the priest invites us to receive the whole Jesus Christ into our hearts
Prayer Of The Faithful -- The Mass goes beyond praying for personal petitions. By the common prayer the people intercede for the Church, civil authorities, salvation of the world and those oppressed by various needs.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
JESUS TOOK
Presentation Of Gifts/Offertory -- As the bread and wine is brought to the altar bring all that you have and all that you are -- your own broken bodies emotions feelings thoughts. Place the physical aspects of our experiences in the bread and the emotional aspects in the wine. Just as the drop of water mingles in the wine we become one with Jesus.
JESUS BLESSED
Eucharistic Prayer -- Joyfully thank and praise for the transformation in our life-situation that is taking and will take place. Bonding with Jesus replaces bondage. This flows into a joyous recitation/singing "Holy, Holy, Holy/Hosanna". This is followed by a petition that the power of God should intervene to consecrate the gifts and that Jesus may be the source of salvation to those who share in Communion. You silently make an acclamation as the Spirit leads as you offer not only the immaculate Victim but yourself; through Christ our mediator so that finally God may be all in all {Vatican Council II -- Austin Flannery op}. A gift becomes a sacrifice only when we give up the intention of receiving something in return. We seek a relationship with God and nothing else.
Words Of Consecration -- We are called not only to service but also to consecration. As the bread and wine is transformed into Jesus Body and Blood, there is a spiritual transformation in each of us. By His stripes we are healed. Drop your problems in the chalice. Wash everyone and thing in His Blood.
Doxology/The Great Amen -- "Through Him, with Him, in Him .... ever. Amen. The Greek word "doxa" means praise. Yes, we do want to belong to You Father, Yes, Father, do with us what You will
COMMUNION
The Our Father -- We pray to our loving Father Abba whose love is perfect. We praise His name from the bottom of our hearts. We ask Him to rule in our hearts and over our iniquities. Our daily bread is not only food for the body but also daily Eucharistic bread. Forgiveness is the crux of the matter. If you have a problem with this then ask God to help you to forgive. If you forgive then you'll be forgiven and will experience the love and healing of Father God. Don't let temptations "nest" in your mind. Jesus please take the problem. The deliverance prayer reassures us of His love, "if God is with us, who shall be against us" (Rom. 8:31)?
The Prayer Of Deliverance The "Embolism" is a prayer to be delivered from every kind of evil, sin and anxiety and anything that comes in the way of our experiencing God's love. We draw succour, "because the one who is in you is more powerful than he who is in the world" (1 Jn. 4:4).
The Sign Of Peace -- By word and gesture, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself" (Mt. 22:39). Total peace, freedom and healing spiritual, emotional, physical, psychologically and intellectual.
JESUS BROKE
Elevation/Breaking Of Bread/The Fraction Rite -- It means that through Communion we, though many in number, become one body because we eat the one Bread of Life which is Christ (1 Cor. 10:17) {Vatican Council II -- Austin Flannery op}. This is about fellowship, service and sharing.
Lamb of God -- Believe you are renewed and healed through Jesus in the Eucharist (Reference Healing The Family Tree Eucharist by Fr Louis Cerulli). We yearn to receive unconditional love.
"Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed" These are sentiments of humility, the blessed assurance that we are saved sinners and the faith and expectation of the person who touched Jesus' garment. Trust in the Lord.
JESUS GAVE
Communion Receiving The Body Of Christ -- Picture Jesus giving you the host. Let Jesus' love transform you completely. As you become one with Him let Him fill every part of your being. Let Jesus' precious Body and Blood heal all the hurts that may block you from receiving the fullness of His life.
Amen -- Just as Jesus gave Himself up completely for our sake we ought to give ourselves to each other with no strings attached.
After Communion -- Listen as God reveals to you what he is doing to renew and revive you and your family tree. Listen to what He wants you to do. Cooperate with God.
DISMISSAL
Blessings -- Receive His blessings so that we can be a source of blessings for others.
Go In Peace -- Thank God for what He has done and for the transformation and transubstantiation in your heart as well. Be a witness for Christ.
Remember all you need is an eager heart. If you are looking for the true living God meditate on Jesus. Why go for second best when you have Him on call on tap ever ready to be what you need Him to be just for you. Check Him out. Give Jesus a chance. If all you need is love then remember, "God is Love" {1 Jn. 4:8}. Just say, "JESUS, I LOVE YOU"!! He'll be there for you. Celebrate Jesus! Celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

Rapture Ready with Rufus? X "!"

Newbie renewed revived Fr Joe D'Souza decided to go into Spiritual warfare on the two horned creature. What better manner than to go all the way and call Fr Rufus Periera. Our Lady of Dolours Church, Sonapur, Marine Lines, was blessed to have Fr Rufus not only for an Inner Healing Lenten Retreat at the church but also for the Paschal Triduum Services conducted at the Cross maidan.
Unknown to many, before the mission started, his team landed at Sonapur Church and laid the ground work - "Jericho" marches, the methods of Intercessory Prayers, meditation on the Blessed Sacrament, visiting the sick and bedridden to share the Word of God and Praise and Worship.
On "D" Day, deliverance not dooms day - Fr Rufus, the Scripture and Spirit sharp teacher, took over. He isn't one of those "fire and brimstone" preachers who have a penchant for the theatrical. He is soothing, calm, musical, humorous, witty, Word based with a soft corner for children.
He started with the unconditional love of Father God - Jesus died for my sins. He then elucidated the significance and meaning behind the "Sacraments" and how they fit in the Catholic Charismatic renewal. He spoke on the various stages in the chain of healing - the first step of the Good news - repentant sinner, repentance (turn away from sin), belief (turn to God), get to the root cause (ask the Holy Spirit to show the way), Reconciliation (Spiritual healing), forgiveness, Eucharist (Ark of the covenant, inner healing).
The Prodigal son - "My son" - isn't just a parable it's on stages of our "walk". Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and everything else will follow. Jesus is the answer. I am the truth (beginning), the way (journey) and the life (end/goal). The relationship with God is simple: repent, be baptised in the name of Jesus (Lordship of Jesus), ask and you will receive the Holy Spirit (this prayer is always answered). The best prayer: Our Father. On the trinity: God the Father - God for us, Jesus - Emanuel, God with us and the Holy Spirit - God in us.
Some nuggets: I only speak to Jesus not the devil. The more I give myself to Jesus the more I receive from Him. There is no scientific explanation of a God experience but I know I can feel Jesus in my heart. Be realistic - when you are deeply prayerful and yet sin pops its ugly head then blame it on the devil - otherwise it's you. Satan targets our will, our mind, emotions, body, assets and relationships (family tree).
He traced the Spirit from Genesis till today - the answer to Pope John XXIII's prayer for a Spirit of renewal and revival in the Church.
The celebration of the mass was an enriching, enlightening experience as he explained the symbolism and significance so that you could experience the Presence. "Lord have mercy" - is about love not pity. "Peace be with you" is about total healing - Spiritual, physical and inner.
On Maundy Thursday/The Lord's supper: This is a continuation of the "promise" of God - Jesus wants to be with us always through the Blessed Sacrament. He drew a parallel between the Eucharist touching the tongue and the touching of the garment of Jesus by the bleeding woman. Jesus the Healer. The "washing of the feet" is about humility and service. Jesus the "Suffering Servant". The need to love one another as Jesus loved us.
On Good Friday: the last seven words of Jesus came alive - The deep feelings of rejection. Forgiveness not revenge, flashbacks to the Sermon on the Mount and the stoning of Stephen The power of the exchange at the Cross by which we are set free. Jesus the Saviour. The act of faith of the thief on the left vis-a -vis the curses of the thief on the right. In John's Gospel Jesus' ministry begins (Wedding feast at Cana) and ends ("Here is your mother") with Mary who is a woman of the Word and a woman of the Spirit. "I am thirsty". The Living waters. Jesus' food is to do the will of God and to do it perfectly. The "It is finished" is not despair but a cry of triumph.
Easter Vigil: Jesus takes us from darkness to Light and from death to Life. Jesus' death is a historical fact. His resurrection is a personal experience and is the cornerstone of our faith. He lives within my heart. Jesus' work was over but our work has begun. Jesus is the Light of the world. Both Fire and Water are symbols of the Holy Spirit. In the Resurrection and the five apparition narratives that happened during the 40 days after His death He healed three burdens. The disciples experienced joy after their sadness (breaking of the bread), doubt (walk to Emmaus, can be combated by a daily reading of the Bible) and fear. He said the healing prayers after each of the seven readings. He also sang the Liturgy. He was quick to point out that there was unction in the readings by the laypersons and that the choir sang beautiful hymns.
Erika shared how a simple prayer to the mother of God, taught to her by her mother, helped her when she was separated from her parents during the war, protected her in difficult situations and finally led her to Jesus. Parents could teach their children simple prayers.
Amidst all this was an element of fun - an uninhibited joy and abandon in praising and worshipping God - through music. Rufus whipped out his accordion and set the Church ablaze with some vibrant praise. He led by example and the crowd followed and realised that you can have fun in the presence of the Lord and that the church would only be Church if you were at peace in the house of your Abba Father.
The choir that rocked the rafters had a chemistry that was different but dynamite. For the first time you had a unique group of individuals thrown together a couple of days before show time. Theirs was a blend of the liturgical solemn serious style of the Church choir, the swaying exuberance of the "prayer" group singers and some uninhibited gatecrashers who prayed together and then just let it rip and each did what they knew best -- Spirit led Praise and Worship. It was not only their hearts and voices that worshipped but their bodies got into the act with some infectious hand clapping, waving, jumping and dancing. The staid Sonapur crowd were shell-shocked and had incredulous smiles. With music in their blood they loosened up and tuned into the Blood at different levels. For the last session on the last day of the retreat Fr Rufus was at the centre of the altar playing his accordion flanked by the members of his team and the choir. The vociferous and action packed participation of the Church brought tears of joy to ones eyes. At the Cross maidan the style was liturgical. However on Easter Sunday they shed their inhibitions and ended with a rousing medley of Praise.
Fr Rufus is an "anointed" man of God who has a deep insight into the Scriptures. He advised everyone to read the Bible daily. His discourses were peppered with humour and wit and you were wide-awake absorbing as much as you could. You were touched at different levels based on your walk or lack of it with the Holy Spirit. It's a Spiritual experience worth dying for.
If you are a Wordsmith you might summarise the "Experience" as - "I" - not "I" strain but "In-filling" of the Holy Spirit. "D" would be Deus Daily, Dancing David and Deliverance day but not dirty devil. If it's "S" then Spirit as in Holy definitely not satan. "R" - Repent and be Rapture ready today or else rue the day! What do you say?

WORD of GOD in Song and Music

Jesus Power screamed the backdrop. Something short circuited. Someone was missing. The Church was waiting with baited breath.

Then like a bolt from the blue -- Jesus unleashed His Power and blew the place apart just when the world was crashing to pieces.

When the Juice hit the band -- Transformation! The Living Waters just let it Rock. The rare timbre in the anointed voices of Abraham and Swapna Kalisseril shifted from pleading to Fire. The Anointed One moved the anointing from Praise to Worship to Glory as they sang, as the Spirit led, 'in tongues' for the Church personally present, for Mumbai, the nation and the nations.

Swapna and 'Birthday Boy' Trevor Wemyss, both on the keyboards, were electrifying as they were jet streaming on a different plane. The cool compere on day 1, Ryan D'Cunha, generated a searing scorching beat on the skins as the heat gravitated to your feet. Fr Lionel Braganza, to some Spirit prompted impromptu jamming on the drums by Ryan, danced and sang "every single cell in my body is happy ... and well". Elridge D'Lima's feet had a hard time keeping up with his flying fingers as He turned on the Power and jazzed up the running booming bass line with some mind-blowing plucking. Nyzel D'Lima just let it rip on the lead guitar. The uninhibited free flowing fingers struck the strings with gay abandon. Lenny Soares's acoustic guitar was rhythmic and throbbing with Life. Abey, Swapna, the Musical Angels and the Church were bobbing and jumping with an energetic pep in their step. The dancers had a lot of bounce for every ounce. Roomi Furtardo's speaking had a sparkle matching the 'strobes'.

The Word came alive and you experienced what Fr Gerard Rodricks was talking about -- "effortless joyful living". You Walked the Way of the Cross with Jesus Christ and Fr Joe D'Abreo as he experienced salvation and the sanctification of the soul. You moved from "unforgiving to loving" with Fr Roland Fialho as you encountered the promise in John 10:10 "abundant Life". Bishop Ferdinand Fonseca zeroed in when he spoke in Hindi on repentance but delivered his punch line in English -- JOY! - Jesus-Others-You. The testimonies had a telling touching tale of their own as Abey, Swapna and Glen Ebnett shared what the Spirit did in and through their lives.

In the celebration of the Holy Eucharist the holy proceedings took on a new hue - Metamorphosis! The Shepherd was in total control as His flock, clergy and laity, were freely worshipping and having fun with their hearts praising, their hands waving and clapping and their voices raised. The experience was energizing. Fr Paul Vaz suddenly, moved by the Spirit, took the cordless mike and took off at a tangent during his lovely homily and touched a raw nerve. One was visible moved as he testified to the witnessing done and the martyrdom faced by his class mates. Lewis D'Souza and the choir added spice to the communion recessional hymns when they joyously sang with full gusto to a distinctly ethnic beat and rhythm which had a masala-mix flavour.

The indomitable Spirit shone on the Holy Family School grounds, Andheri (E) on March 24th and 25th as the focused worshippers and the Charismatic children of Christ gave their 'love' offerings for a noble cause - Vinayalaya.

You heard the Word in speech and song. You were baptized in the Fire through Jesus' Power. What a blast! Amazing! Incredibly amazing!

JESUS EVENINGS
Reviewed by Jose' Cordeiro

With the JESUS EVENINGS a new "dawn" has arisen on all who invited the Holy Spirit in. One triune God was glorified as the worshippers were led by the singing couple, Abey and Swapna Kalisseril at an outreach which spanned three venues - Good Shepherd Church Andheri (W), Holy Cross Church, Kurla (W) and Our Lady of Lourdes, Malad (W). The "church" was a unique beautiful blend of two differing streams of worshippers, the solemn serious sorts contrasted by the super-charged-clapping ones, that converged cohesively to form the one body of Christ.

The respective church choirs got the people in a "ready" mood for Abey and Swapna to animate the evenings. The 'Living Waters' had instrumentalists who were inspirational and invigorating. Abey's was the soulful testimony of a life ruined by loneliness, alcohol and drugs but resurrected by Jesus. Swapna spoke on the two aspects of Praise and Worship and dramatized the three stages of the "talk"- when you talk to each other, when you talk to God and when God talks to you. Abey's and Swapna's spiritual singing straight from the heart, during the Praise and Worship as well as the Eucharistic Celebration, moved the Mumbaikars. Swapna was spirited and scintillating on the Korg keyboards whereas Bondo, the percussionist, energized all with his brilliant booming beat. The youthful choir, musicians and dancers from Our Lady of Dolours, Wadala gave it all they had.

Fr Warner's enlightening homily enumerated the three types of sinners - the people who think that everything is sin, those that think that nothing is and the ones who idolize it. He then reflected on God's unconditional forgiving love. The "live wire" behind the scenes was the dashing, dapper, debonair Fr Joe 'Monty' Monteiro sdb.

However the "evenings" belonged to Jesus. The "church" was eager and expectant and as usual Jesus showed up. 'WOW'! 'Thanks Jesus'!! 'I feel HIM'!!! - so said the "teeny boppers" and the "youthful" golden oldies alike. If you had to describe the JESUS EVENINGS in one word it would be - Awesome! If you had an inclination towards music and/or Scripture -

ONE Two, Two or Three,
JESUS died for me.
By HIS stripes HE washed my sins
JESUS set me free.

When I was down and out
When I was blue,
When I was miserable
Yes HE showed up too.

When I was in the pit
And broken in two,
HE just stepped right in
HE fixed me through and through.

CHRISTMAS CAROLLING IN THE CITY

This is that time of the year when the songsters sing and swing to the symphony of the Season -- the warm notes, the cold air, the birth of the Babe of Bethlehem. No they are not swallows and it isn't summer - its the Stop-Gaps and Jesus is the reason for the Season. The Star that led the stars -- and not the Three Kings -- stopped and shed its Light at the NCPA on December 9th and 10th before it moved North to the suburbs and shone at St. Andrew's auditorium on the 16th.

The National Centre For The Performing Arts and The Stop-Gaps Cultural Academy co-presented over a couple of days A Festival Of Festive Music which kick started with beautiful twinkling lights, a fire hearth, the pups and The Naval Band, conducted by Cdr Sebastian A. Anchees NM, in full regalia performing 'Memories Of Christmas' which was a lovely instrumental medley starting with 'The First Noel'. The winds and xylophone mingled marvellously in 'Come All Ye Faithful'.

The 12 to 15 year old kids from Malad, Joseph's Jubilant Juniors, debuted at the show to a classy carol in Hindi, 'Natal Ki Kahani' which had lovely fusion music on the violin, tabla and acoustic guitar. The Czech folk tune - 'Zither Carol' had a zing to it. The Living Voices broke the language barrier as they carolled in Filipino, Spanish, Hindi and English. They had depth and resonance and their 'Mary Had A Baby' showcased their voices.

St Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian Church Choir was nostalgic as their conductor of many years, Mathew Abraham, bid farewell to us. They were melodious as they blended beautifully in a Malayalam and later a Hindi carol. But they charmed the crowd with their 'Naranai Suragan Nathan', which was to an incredible Indian beat with an ever changing tempo.

Christo Fernandes conducted The Vibrant Voices who did an adapted, modified version of 'Jingle Bells' with a tring tring that was hilarious as they dashed through the Bombay Pune highway. The soloists of Heather D'Souza's The Chanters of Jesus did a superb Southern Gospel soul version of 'The Night That Christ Was Born' to a running bass line and peppy ivories and a very contemporary 'Jesus Is The Reason For The Season' which had jazzy overtones peppered with soft pop rock.

The St Cecilia's Choir conducted by Fereida Postwalla came into their own with a bit of theatrics in 'Santa Wants a Brand New Bag' - the crowd went crazy as Santa winked and let the bag drop. Harmony led by Denis Fernandes performed a cappella their Platters-like 'Rockin' Down The Chimney Tonight' which was memorable.

In a self composition 'Carol From The Farm', Nigel J. D'Souza's The Victory Chorus Line quacked and grunted their way into the hearts of the crowd in a song which had shades of 'Old Mac Donald' but was interspersed with jazz, rock, intentional off-key singing and then the cool, joyous, melodious "Nightingale" version which included 'Joy to the World'. Salvation Singers boogie-woogied as they belted out a great rag-time, rock and roll 'Christmas Rockin' Eve'. The Marion Choir conducted by Richie Rodrigues was unique in their staccato style of singing and piano playing - 'The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy'.

The Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble, the ones who have performed, under the baton of Alfred D'Souza, at festivals and concerts all over the continent and the Holy Land have a wide repertoire. On the first day they entered dramatically to the light of lanterns and the 'Carol Of The Russian Children'. 'Still A Bach Christmas' was a fitting tribute to Johan Sebastian. They moved from jazz to a cappella and even did Indian fusion in 'Song Of The Gopika'. But they broke flanks in 'Holiday Rock' and the crowd went for broke as they jived on stage. They were fantastic on the second day as they sang straight from the soul with voices which were fine-tuned and controlled to a fault. They did a medley which had the reindeers nose and horns in the act.

Alfred Mr. Stop-Gap D'Souza, was hilarious when after a great bout of coughing by the crowd he christened the chorus - A Coughing Carol!

O CHRIST

O CHRIST ...

A real "Life" story narrated by Jose' Cordeiro

I am faced with the eternal dilemma ... Since the Author gave me a choice -- Do I exclaim -- O CHRIST! or is it a mere question -- O CHRIST? Or do I do it in 2 voices? In the game of Life it is these very choices that confound us. Often the scenario which stares us in the face is that our stockings are chock-a-block and torn due to the twisted troubled screwed up scary sorrowful sham that we term ... Life.

In ACT N and SCENE N, we have two masks SCATTERER and GATHERER (cf. Lk 11:23) but only one theme. This is the season of good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day ... a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord (Lk 2:10-11). Have you experienced this outrageous joy? Do you believe that He is your personal Saviour? Do you know the Lord intimately? Do you really trust Him? Let us do a reality check as we find the Truth.

?!

In church Jesus is put on a pedestal while the CHURCH MICE are scurrying around doing their own thing.

Jesus would have wielded the whip at this Temple (cf. Mt 21:12-13).

?!

The PRETENTIOUS PREACHER will put the Pharisees to shame while dissecting the word.

He does not know the Word.

?!

You may have heard of the modern day DISCIPLES who banish the children from the presence of Jesus.

Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs (Mt 19:14, Mk 10:14, Lk 18:16). Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me (Mt. 18:5).

?!

The posters scream -- WORLD RENOWNED HEALER.

... Jesus?

?!

Hey JOKER! How come you are always on a high?

The joy of the Lord lights up your face, as you LOL (laugh out loudly).

?!

KNOW-IT-ALL would have instructed Jesus what He should do.

Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Mt. 18:4).

Your CASTE, CURRENCY and COMMUNITY take precedence over your CREED at the time of marriage ... at the time of the posting of a person, pastor, priest, Patriarch ...

I BELIEVE ... in one God ... in one holy and CATHOLIC church.

?!

Repentance belongs to the time of John the Baptist.

Jesus said twice in quick succession ... but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did (Lk 13:3 & 5).

BIBLE CUTTING is wrong they admonish.

It is ironic that if St Agustine did not resort to it then we would not have The Confessions (Book VIII). FREEBIE has come for free food, fruits and feni.

One does not live by bread alone (Mt 4:4).

The PILLAR-OF-SALT was the reward for disobedience to God (cf. Gen 19:26).

The SHEPHERD taught us to pray saying Our Father ... (Mt 6:9, Lk11:2).

Is the black sheep the white sheep of our family?

?!

Get realistic. I resolve not to read such rubbish in the New Year.

Rubbish. This revelation is real and rejuvenating. Try restructuring your resolutions.

?!

O CHRIST? Your hands go up in frustration, are clenched in defiance and are raised in anger.

O CHRIST! Let us come with open hands, give a clap offering to the Lord and raise our hands in thanks and praise,

?!

For Christ's sake wipe that smirk off your spiritually challenged face and seek His face. All of us have a bit of a Gatherer and Scatterer. When we read Ps 37 we smugly think the evil, wicked enemy is somewhere out there. We don't get stress spots or worry wrinkles thinking this is an end of days warning. We sigh saying, end of story.

Thank God! there is a big time happily ever after ending. I can do all things through him who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). His good news joy and salvation is a free gift for ALL PEOPLE and not for some chosen denomination. Search the depths of your heart and dig deeper to sift the divine from the debris. If you have fallen, slipped or backslid ... so be it. If your ideas take a flip don't flap or flop. Get up and go ahead. Try Jesus for a change. Talk to Jesus Emmanuel ... God is with us (cf. Mt 1:23). Listen! Silently seek. Shout and scream for your Saviour. Worship Him. Live and love for Him and Him alone. Only He is trustworthy. Cling to Him. He is all you have. O Come Let Us Adore Him. Touch base with Him even when your instincts are base. Connect to Him when you feel disconnected. Let your attitude be that of Jesus. Network with Jesus as you interact right from the miraculous to the mundane -- prayer, people, pariahs, pets, e-mails, envelopes, cards, carols, cakes, cookies, caramel custard, water, what-have-you and even the air that you breathe. Remember help is only a question away. So ... ask and you shall receive (cf. Mt 7:8).  Not some silly stupid senseless stuff in our silken stockings to satisfy our senses. Ask that Jesus be birthed in your heart. Not for just the 12 days of Christmas but for every moment of your life. Don't waste time. Do it now ... no matter what ... and receive Him with an emotionless ecstatic everlasting exclamation ... O CHRIST!!!

CHRISTMAS WITH KIDS

(Tej-Prasarini)

'Tis the season when traditionally all over the world the family gathers together to celebrate the birth of its most famous Kid - Jesus. When kids, below 12, are the lead singers and they do the honours, with sensitive, controlled and joyous voices to a predominantly peppy, perky beat, you'll be moved.

This album has a lovely bass line through out which offsets the high-pitched though soft and mellow voices of the kids. It kicks off with great percussion, an Ooh Aah, a good bass line and you'll be Oohing and Aahing with them as they launch into Mary's Boy Child. Good King Wencesles is bouncy. Deck The Hall and Jingle Bells are done to a crisp march whereas Angels We Have Heard, Hark The Herald and Silent Night are sensitive. O Little Town, Noel and White Christmas are sweet, soul stirring lovely. Silver Bells displays the depth of their voices as they blend harmoniously.

Maureen Pereira has to be commended for directing the innate talent and retaining their individuality. In the skilful sound crafting, Amon Daniels, has showcased the voices and kept the background music soft and muted. On violin are Fr Kennneth Pereira and Fr Edison Fernnandes. Fr Ian Doulton and Amon Daniels are on keyboards and Aamon doubles up on the guitar. On the inlay cover Sudhir Chitte has used the traditional red and green to highlight the leaves and holly. The Christmas card is in yellow and the visual effect is completed with the baby Saviour, Santa and a stocking with a pup.

You'll groove to all the 11 traditional tracks, which have a touch of folk, a bit of singsong, a lot of feel and panache. As a bonus these are repeated with minus one tracks so that you could sing-a-long and do your own karaoke recording at home or even in public. But be cautioned, you'll definitely be given a run for your money as these kids are just cool. You will have a lot of fun and frolic added to the festivities, as these kids will help you touch base with the "Kid" in you.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

CHRISTMAS CAROLS  (Pauline Communications)

The songs are traditional the treatment is not. It has a merry mix that gives it an edge. The simple stylish song crafting has a jammin  feel with contemporary vocals set to very retro music which is "in" again. Great vocalists, both lead and chorus; outstanding 60's style plucking and runs on electric and acoustic guitar and neat musical scoring by Gerard Machado, are what makes this compilation lovely.

Hark The Herald Angels Sing has Prakash  Hule on running bass, lovely jazz vocals and a 12 bar interlude of lead guitar -- the result is unique. Go Tell It On The Mountains has some Indian folk style organ play. The guitar work on Away In The Manger is pure folk Woodstock era. The folk blues harmonica and superb light jazz contemporary vocals add that bit of funk when combined with the electrifying guitar runs to make Mary's Boy Child -- cool. Silent Night is daringly different. It is not soft and slow but so sensitive. The brilliant lead male vocals are pure soul jazz, the rhythm upbeat while Babu Joseph on harmonica adds that flair creating a soul, blues feel. These two numbers are definitely top class. The other tracks which complete this feisty festival album are Oh Come All Ye Faithful, What Child Is This, Oh Holy Night, Joy To The World, C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S and We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

The lyrics are an add on. The inlay card is elegantly designed in bright red with bells, a Christmas tree and a Senior spectacled Santa. Don't get fooled. The CD sports a youthful Santa which reflects the blast you will have as you bounce and bob to the beat. The fun and frolic just rubs off on you as you listen. You might just want to add this to your collection.
