Carman - Passion For Praise - Volume I
(Sparrow Records)

Carman has a distinctive beat in his heart and his music which invariably pumps up the Blood in your heart. He starts with the memorable 'Lord I Lift Your Name On High' and breathes into it love and thanksgiving. 'Let The Fire Fall' and 'I Feel Jesus' are emotive. In 'Now's The Time / Hosanna' he lets out all the stops and is joyous in his celebration. The islands flavour with whoops of delight, drum beats and the lovely Caribbeaan music will have you swaying. 'The Prayer Anthem' is the "Our Father" to music which is authentic Carman - reverential but robust and rousing. The Don Moen 'Give Thanks' showcases his tender tenor voice. He wide repertoire includes 'Jesus Is The Light' which is sung to County and Western right down to the twang on the guitars. 'I've Been Redeemed/ I Love Jesus' has a beat and tune you'll identify with when you are on a picnic. This outdoors feeling will get you knocking on the Door. 'Shout To Lord' is a remarkably different interpretation where he starts intimate but ends by literally goading everyone to SHOUT. The Rich Mullins hymn, which was voted song of the decade, 'Awesome God' has him stating Bible truths right from Genesis onwards to the back ground of a full throated choir singing. This is a very different interpretation from the original but yet remarkably touching. The last track, 'Bless The Name Of Jesus', will have you swinging once again shouting "Glory to His name". Carman will leave you passionately praising to a quick tempo where you'll be literally jumping up and down with joy. The wide range of music in this offering is remarkable.

STORIES FROM THE HEART - Bob Carlisle
(DMG/ Y-Music)

Carlisle sings straight from his heart heartfelt messages which will bring a change of heart in you. He starts with lovely classical music which is woven into contemporary notes and a children's choir in an outstanding track which will tug at your heart -- 'We Fall Down'. Check the lyrics, "And the saints are just the sinners, who fall down …. and get up." 'I Will Shelter You' which follows is comforting. 'Fathers Love' is intimate wherein the background score is contemporary with its light piano, delicate fiddle and deep bass. 'International' is a fusion of oriental strains in the strings and the background female vocals set to a contemporary beat. 'Lately (Dreamin' about Babies)' has tender touching lyrics set to modern arrangements.
The flip side starts with some crazy guitar riffs which melt into a superb contemporary pop dance track as the tender tenor turns raw as he rocks you with the 'Power Of Love'. The mellifluous malleable tenor voice then flows into a great duet with Kathy Mattea 'Somewhere'. 'All Of Me' is a peek into the soul and what one has to offer. 'In The Hands Of Jesus' is R&B influenced with Bob baring his soul. The offering closes with a bonus track, 'Father's Love'. However this time around the background music is classical orchestra.
This album follows close on his 1997 mega-selling album, Butterfly Kisses. He has another winner here with lyrics and melodies which will touch a raw nerve as it exposes you to God's Love.

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalms 46:10).

(SPEECHLESS) - Steven Curtis Chapman
(Sparrow / Sitara Music)

It takes off with a rat-a-tat on the skins and shifts to a 90's pop dance sound as you 'Dive' and take the leap of faith. The fiddle gives way gently to the guitar as you are left 'Speechless' listening to God, motivated by inspired lyrics. Steven, to some amazing guitar vamps, rocks the house with 'The Change' and turns the heat up with 'Whatever' I will obey. 'I Do Believe' "that you are the way, the truth and the life" is metal-driven and rock-influenced with a repetitive robotic "I do" to the drum beat. 'Finger Prints Of God' is a soft track with strong messages. 'With Hope' will touch all that have lost someone they love. This remarkable, beautiful, varied compilation ends with a symphonic, operatic start to 'Be Still And Know' that He is God.
For the record this 11th album will add to his collection of 29 chart topping contemporary Christian music singles. It has won, this year, the Grammy for Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. This is for Generation 'X' or is it 'Z'. The prudes can check the inlay card to verify that this exuberant, multitalented, gifted, guitarist and singer/songwriter has stayed with the Word while leaving you musically and Spiritually satisfied. You'll be speechless and listening.

The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need (Psalms 23:1).

RAZE
(Omega Music)

Raze has really cool, religious rap with touches of reggae and pop, a lot of robust rhythms on the guitar accompanied by reverberations on the keyboards. You'll be on a roll with the drums as you raise your hands and Spirit from start to end with the greatest commandment - 'I Need Your Love'. If it's alright you'll say Yeah or is it Yo! You'll be upbeat, moving and groving and will let it 'Shine' since you've "got Your Love in my soul". 'Shouldn't It Be Me' has a vibrant beat to deep rap as "Another One died in my place". 'Hold On' to your faith and don't give in to the pressure as "every things gonna be alright" 'cause You'll 'Never Let Me Down' so 'Listen'. On the flip side you'll really rocket with the runs on the bass and the rugged beat on the drums and you'll 'Pump It Up' for Jesus and give it up to the Lord as you go from darkness to a 'Brighter Day' as you go free "Cause the Son came down He was hammered on a tree". For that you'll start by saying 'Thank You' to Him for the trials and the higher ground. You'll shout "Yeah" while you "put your hands in the air". In 'The Way' the beat is gentle as they ask Him to "lead me on to the place I belong". You'll be roaring and rapping to the reprise, 'I Need Your Love'. You'll have a rollicking time ripping hell apart to righteous rap which will show you the road and put you back on the rails. Yo!

SHOUT HALLELUJAH - Integrity Music
Bishop Clarence E. McClendon presents the Harvest Fire Mega Mass Choir

If you are looking for Urban Praise that is Spiritually smart, soul stirring, sole stomping and slick in Scriptures, sound and style then tune in. Clarence's vocals are raw, intense, punctuated and preacher passionate. As you put your hands together you will get your act together as the Spirit within will touch base with the eternal Spirit. The praise starts with a roar in a robust 'I Came To Magnify The Lord'. In a twist he moves to worship mode as he recites the lyrics while the choir sings in the background in 'There Is A Fountain' and his own compositions, 'Hour of Visitation' and the soul baring beautiful prayer 'Holy Spirit We Will Wait On Thee'.
The title track 'Shout Hallelujah' sung by Tyrone Fields has an islands feel full of freedom in the Spirit. This is outstanding as you shout, dance, lift your hands and offer a clap offering. The upbeat 'We Have Come To Glorify' is followed by an old favorite 'Great and Mighty Is He' in which he goes to town in a rendition that is racy, lively and enriching. However in between are a couple of bars of music from the track 'Jump' of Van Halen. This is discordant in a Christian album as Van Halen is noted for being Anti- Christian. By contrast the singer songwriter, Kurt Lykes is tender in 'Lord You Are Welcome'. The Bishop ends with a blast in a contemporary black soul gospel number 'May The Lord God Bless You Real Good.' This unique album has the electricity and excitement of a live performance interspersed with intimate worship and spontaneous crowd participation. As he leads you into the Presence you'll have a lot of fun along the way.

Do not be afraid - I am with you! (Isaiah 42)
Happy are those who put their trust in the LORD (Isaiah 30:18)

WoW WORSHIP - Blue
(Integrity Music, Maranatha Music and Vineyard Music)

The WoW Worship committee is a partnership between the world's three leaders in worship music. In May 1999 they came out with "Today's 30 Most Powerful Worship Songs" which is packed with the best praise and worship songs.
The YELLOW DISC takes off with pipes and all in Andy Park's very Celtic rendition of 'The River Is Here'. This is contrasted with 'Ancient of Days' which has the Ron Kenoly treatment with the bass lines and his trademark beat to some lovely woodwinds. The electric guitars and drums surface in two glorious tracks, 'Let It Rise' and 'Let The River Flow'. The acoustic-based 'Change My Heart Oh God' is inspiring. So is the honey-toned Matt Redman in 'The Heart Of Worship'. Darlene Zschech's hymn 'Shout To The Lord' craves attention. Paul Baloche pleads 'Open the Eyes Of My Heart'. 'I Love You Lord' tugs at your heart. In 'Father I Adore You' the Maranatha Singers take a simple hymn to a sublime level. 'In His Time' is beautiful. 'Give Thanks' by Don Moen touches a tender spot. The closer is a rousing march as you 'Come into His Presence'.
The BLUE DISC enriches you with the touching 'Lord I Lift your Name On High' and rouses you with the live version of 'My Life Is In You, Lord'. However the rendition of 'Mighty Is Our God' from the album "Such Joy" is simply superb standout stuff right from the jazzy easy carefree vocals, imaginative plucking on the acoustic guitar down to the rat-a-tat-tat on the bongos. Darrel Evans renders a robust 'We Will Embrace Your Move'. Scott Underwood's gentle rock ballad 'Take My Life' is classy. The delicate rendition of the John Wimber song, 'Isn't He', to some soothing piano-play is moving. It gets emotive in 'Blessed Be The Lord God Almighty' and 'Jesus Name Above All Names' but the high is the closing track 'I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever'.
This two-disc worship-mood music was the fifth largest grosser for 1999. It's spiritual sacred sounds will fill you up daily and strengthen your relationship with Christ. Praise God The WOW Way........
